The U.S. – Indonesia Society (USINDO) and American Chambers of Commerce (AmCham) Indonesia are pleased to announce a Special Open Forum featuring one of the most influential figures in the U.S. defense community, Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr., Commander of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM). USPACOM is one of nine Unified Combatant Commands of the United States Armed Forces and is responsible for the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

As Asia-Pacific is one of the world’s most vibrant and populous regions, seeking to ensure its peace and stability has been a key long-term U.S. interest.  A region as large and dynamic as the Asia-Pacific has also had myriad challenges that have become more complex. Long-standing issues such as the conflict between claimant states in the South China Sea as well as tensions intensified by nuclear-armed states such as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), have been accompanied by new threats of terrorism that have crossed beyond the borders of countries and regions. These issues have become a threat not just to the overall stability of the region but also to the individual countries within the Asia-Pacific, including one of its largest countries, Indonesia.

As the primary Unified Combatant Command responsible for ensuring overall stability in the Asia-Pacific region, what is the USPACOM’s role in facing these issues? What does it see as the most pressing threats to peace and stability that currently need to be tackled? What forms of security cooperation are needed to overcome these threats? What opportunities are there for the U.S. to cooperate with Indonesia, in terms of enhancing the security relations between both countries?

Join us for this rare opportunity to delve into the dynamics of the U.S. – Indonesia bilateral security relationship. Our excellent speaker, Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr., one of the major figures in the U.S. defense community, who reports to the President of the United States through the Secretary of Defense, will elaborate on the role of the U.S. Pacific Command in the Asia-Pacific, the regional challenges currently being faced in the region, and the opportunities for U.S. – Indonesia security relations.
