The Society runs an intensive ten-week language and general studies program for U.S. students selected in a competitive application process. The program is held at Gadjah Mada University, which is located in Yogyakarta in Central Java. Students will be responsible for any deductible payments.
Jakarta Orientation
The purpose of the orientation in Jakarta is to get students acclimated to the local time and get their “feet on the ground” before starting intensive language classes. Another goal of the orientation is to give students a basic introduction to Indonesia through meetings with respected scholars, government officials, and other experts on Indonesia. The orientation is also an opportunity for students to network, especially if they plan on conducting future research in Indonesia. The 2008 program plans to arrive in Jakarta on Saturday, June
7 and depart for Yogya on Wednesday, June 11.
Past programs orientations have included: Jakarta City Tour, Danamon Peduli (foundation arm of Bank Danamon), Ministry of Finance, DKT International, Van Zorge, Heffernan & Associates, The Asia Foundation, US Embassy, Mercy Corps International, USAID.
Yogyakarta Orientation
When students arrive in Yogya they will stay in a hotel for 2 nights before moving in with their host families to ease them into the new setting. In-country coordinator, Ibu Rose, welcomes the students to Yogya and introduces them to her staff who will be assisting the students throughout their time in Yogya. Ibu Rose organizes a fun dinner with all the host families giving everyone the opportunity to meet one another before “move-in day” on Friday. Students also meet with their tutors and together they go for a city tour of Yogya. Gadjah Mada University hosts an official opening ceremony to introduce the students to the instructors and launch the language program. Placement exams are also given for those students wanting to participate in the intermediate level class.
Classes
The language program is run by INCULS (Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service) at Gadjah Mada University. The USINDO program typically offers two class levels: beginner and intermediate.
Class schedule: Monday – Friday from 8 a.m to 11 a.m.
- Reading & Vocabulary
- Grammar and Writing
- Speaking (oral practice)
Private Tutorials are held every Monday and Wednesday after regular classes with Indonesian graduate students at UGM. Each USINDO student gets paired with a tutor to practice Bahasa Indonesia and assist with homework and daily life activities (such as going to the market and taking students around campus)
Special Lectures
USINDO with the input from students will organize lectures with special topics or lecturers.
If USINDO does not receive
inputs from students then it is
possible for special lectures
not to occur.
Past special lectures have included: Benjamin Smith Ph.D on current Indonesian Electoral System and general elections; Djoko Moerdiyanto M.A, Chairman of the English Department at Gadjah Mada University gave a lecture on the relationship between the US and Indonesia during and after the Cold War.
Cultural Workshops
Students are able to get first hand experience of the Indonesian culture through several workshops. It is mandatory that all students participate in the Gamelan Workshop. However, they have their choice of taking one or two of the following workshops: Batik, Dance, Martial Arts, and Cooking.
Students can also watch Gamelan and Wayang performances. Last year, one student was trained as a Wayang puppeteer.
Field Trips
As part of the learning experience, Ibu Rose organizes two or three weekend trips around central Java and Bali.
Past program field trips have included: Candi (ancient temple) Borobudur, Candi Prambanan, Candi Sukuh, Candi Ceto, Solo, the beach, Batik Factory, Gamelan maker, Antique Market, Sunan Palace.
Host Families
Home stay families are experienced and most have been part of the USINDO program for a long time. Students usually view the host families as one of the best aspects of the USINDO program. Prior to departure we ask students to complete a housing questionnaire stating preferences and requirements (i.e. dietary restrictions), which assists us in pairing the students with a host family. Students will have a private room. Bathroom facilities do have flushing toilets. However not all host families have typical US showers, although some do. Some host families have tubs of water in which you clean yourself by pouring water from the tub over your body. DO NOT SIT IN THE TUB! Some students have learned this lesson the hard way.
Most families speak English and tend to want to practice their English with the students. However, they will assist with homework and will speak Bahasa Indonesian if students ask.
Host families provide breakfast and dinner. Students are typically on campus during lunch, and therefore responsible for paying for their own lunch.
Practicum Period
During the middle of the program students will have a week break from classes and workshops. Students are allowed to travel within Indonesia during this time to conduct research or for leisure.
The week break for the 2008 program is July 13 - July 20.
Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements and costs
University Credit
Number of classroom hours: 112
Number of tutorial hours: 32
Students will receive an official transcript from Gadjah Mada University.
Students are responsible for arranging to receive credit from their respective institutions. Each institution’s rules differ. Some do accept credit from the USINDO program and some do not.
