As the world’s third and fourth most populous nations, the United States and Indonesia are both highly affected by the impact of population and demographic issues on their economic development possibilities.  By 2050, Indonesia’s population could rise from 247 million to over 289 million, and the U.S. population is on track to grow from 312 million to 397 million.  Increasing urbanization is a fact in both countries as well, especially in Indonesia, where, according to the World Bank, all future population growth will be urban.

Underlying the common issues of population size and urbanization, the two countries face very distinct demographic shifts:

• Indonesia is a fast-growing economy with a growing youth population.  It is presently experiencing a “demographic dividend” whereby the working age population, such as the elderly and the young.

• U.S. population is caused not only by births, but by decreased death rates and increased net immigration.  Within this growth, American policy makers must manage retirement and health care systems to serve an aging population with all the financial and organizational challenges that this entails.

Such demographic factors have major economic and political implications for policies requiring firm foundation of knowledge of demographic trends.  This forum will discuss how both government and non-governmental groups take demographics into account in shaping economic and political decision-making.

This forum will also discuss several key questions:  What is the general demographic outlook for the U.S. and Indonesia?  How might each country’s changing demographics affect public policy?  Likewise, how will future population changes affect each country’s potential for economic growth?  What are the challenges for Indonesia’s education sector to realize the potential economic gains from its high percentage of youth?  Conversely, what are the implications if this youth is productively employed?  What key opportunities does each country need to explore to reap more positive impact from their changing demography?
