Daniel R. Russel became Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs on July 12, 2013. Prior to his appointment Assistant Secretary he served at the White House as Special Assistant Secretary he served at the White House as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Asian Affairs on the National Security Staff from January 2009 until July 2013.  Mr. Russel is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and his prior distinguished service includes assignments in Japan, The Hague, and Cyprus.
