Indonesia is not only the world’s third largest democracy, but its democratic institutions are strengthening. In addition to the highly participatory and democratic 2014 election of President Jokowi, the role and importance of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) has increased substantially. Presently, President Joko Widodo’s coalition of parties, the Great Indonesian Coalition (KIH), holds a minority of the seats in the DPR. The leadership of the House, and all of the committees are chaired by members of the opposition Red-and-White Coalition (KMP) and those of the non-aligned Democratic Party (PD), with members of KIH as deputy chairs of several committees.

There is now an enhanced balance of power between the executive and the legislative branches compared with the past. This evolution changes the context of Indonesia’s decision making, and continues the long-term trend of the deepening and durability of Indonesia’s democratic institutions.

USINDO is most pleased to present in Washington the new Speaker of the DPR, His Excellency Setya Novanto, in his first trip to the U.S. as Speaker. Speaker Novanto will provide his views of the present role and strength of the DPR, the role of its committees, its role with the Executive Branch, and his plans for fostering the DPR’s relations with the U.S. House of Representatives.

A seated luncheon will be followed by the Speaker’s address and Questions and Answers.
