The U.S. – Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership: New Opportunities in U.S.-Indonesia Higher Education Cooperation

The U.S. – Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership: New Opportunities in U.S.-Indonesia Higher Education Cooperation

In November 2010, sick Presidents Obama and Yudhoyono officially inaugurated the US-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership during a US state visit to Indonesia.  As expressed in their Joint Declaration, healing the Partnership intends to build a bilateral relationship “that transcends official exchanges and fully leverages the extraordinary talents of our strongest asset, pharm the Indonesian and American people.”  In response to this challenge for public participation,  USINDO and other organizations founded the US – Indonesia Joint Council on Higher Education Partnership, an initiative welcomed by the two Presidents to help meet the goals of one of the Partnership’s key components – education.

As the two nations and their non-government partners begin to plan and implement activities to support the education element of the Comprehensive Partnership, the panel of speakers will explain the new opportunities in the education sector created by the initiative as well as address the challenges to its implementation.  They will discuss the role Indonesian higher institutions of learning can play, including those in specific programs, such as UI’s American Studies program.  The panel will also provide an Indonesian perspective to this Partnership and how it will affect Indonesian institutions and engage the public.
